You are the Light of the World – So Shine!

“Don’t you know yet? It’s your light that lights the world.”

Rumi

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14 -16

There’s just something about light that intrigues me. I’ve always loved it. I have hung crystals in my windows so the sun can make rainbows on the wall. The message on my voicemail and my personal email is, “You are the Light of the world – so shine!” The meme below my signature on my church email is a light burst behind the words, “Let Your Light Shine.” I came up with the name for this Unity of Austin e-newsletter, “Shine the Light.” And I’ve always loved the “angels” on lakes – the shimmering sunlight on gently rippling water. The closing I frequently use for emails, letters, and even these Heartnotes is, “In the Love and Light of the Christ.” I think I love light!

I hope that you love light too. I hope you love all the many physical ways that light shows up with such beauty. And more than that I hope you love spiritual light. That can mean giving a hard situation the light touch by putting emotional space between you and the concern. Tuning into spiritual light can mean letting your mind relax so you sense the Presence of God within and with you. Becoming aware of spiritual light can also mean opening to a more spacious perspective, the higher viewpoint where solutions are born.

When you are stressed, bring into your mind your picture of God’s peace. When you are ill, bring into your mind your picture of God’s healing power and your well-being. When you are struggling with finances or material lack of any kind, bring into your mind your picture of God as your abundant Source. When you are experiencing friction in your relationships bring into your mind your picture of God’s harmony and love.

The Light that is in you is the brilliance of a trillion suns and more. It’s beauty and power are more than enough to guide you through any crisis or lead you into abundant fulfillment. You really are the Light of the world—don’t you know yet?

In the Love and Light of the Christ,

Rev. Anna
