March is the month many of us will do a spring cleaning of our gardens and our homes. Pulling weeds, cleaning closets and getting rid of what is not desirable or no longer serves us or it’s simply time to let go of. Lent is a time of spring cleaning as well. It is a time of focused awareness of those thought patterns and belief systems that do not serve our highest good. A time of letting go.
In this process of letting go it is also necessary to affirm what we want to see expressed through us. Like a garden that has been weeded, we must plant what we want to see grow and bloom or the weeds will soon take over again. In Unity this process is known as denials and affirmations. Denials are simply about denying anything outside of us has any true power. There is only One Power, and that is the Power of God, Good, that is within us. We affirm this through affirmations, or Truth statements – not to make them true, but because they are true!
Spring cleaning is an opportunity for transformation. Just as we transform the landscapes of our gardens and yards, we can transform the landscapes of our minds and truly resurrect into a new way of life, a new way of being. As the Apostle Paul so tellingly wrote to the Philippians (4:8-9):
“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.”
