Living in the Love and Light of God

… for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7

A friend recently shared that she feels overwhelmed by the many things happening in our world at this time. She wanted to know how others were keeping uplifted. One response was, “See the facts for what they are–temporary. Then determine to see and know that all people and all creation are filled with the love and light of God. Breathe into that love and light and express it in all you do. In that way, you participate in creating a more loving, just, and abundant world.”

What do you think about that response? Do you believe it? Our Unity perspective teaches us that the thoughts we habitually think, the attitudes in which we stand, the actions we regularly take all add up to what we actually trust and rely on. There are basically two options—fear or love. Excessive fear—beyond a healthy, reasonable prudence—leads us to chronic anxiety and an inability to think and act creatively. Fear spawns even more upset or keeps us frozen in inaction. However, love tempered with wisdom leads us into freedom, authentic expression, fulfilling relationships, and participation in creating a better world.

The really good news is this, found in an insight penned by Thomas Troward, 19th century metaphysician, “The difference between love and fear is that love is eternal and fear is not.” In every moment of every day we have the power to choose love. It isn’t easy, yet it is simple. And it is well within our reach. Join in with the billions of people around the world who in this moment are choosing love and light. You are just one, yes–AND you are indeed one – one who counts and one with God, yourself, and all creation.

In the Love and Light of the Christ,

Rev. Anna
