Hope is The Seed

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 17:20
What is hope? How does it differ from faith? I believe that hope is often what we cling to when our faith is challenged. It is the seed that has the potential to bear fruit.
We hope for a lot of things both in our own lives and for our world. We hope for peace, we hope for prosperity, we hope that things will get better. Often when they do not we may feel our hopes, our wishes, have been dashed. And yet, somewhere deep within lies that hope – the seed of our faith.
We must nurture our faith. If we continue to nurture it through all the seasons of our lives, it will grow. As we mature spiritually our faith becomes an understanding faith, and that faith becomes a knowing. Knowing that nothing is impossible with God.
It takes work. Like any seed that is planted, we must nurture it. Through our practice of sacred communion with God, our practice of prayer and meditation, we are guided in the actions that will grow our faith, our understanding, and our living from that awareness. Hope is the seed that leads us to knowing that nothing is impossible with God.
