He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.”
Luke 12:22-23
How could Jesus say that? Obviously, people need to eat and be sheltered. We do worry about how we will meet the needs of our human existence. We get caught up in the concerns of the day. Jesus knew that. Far from being heartless, he was pointing his disciples to the solution to the fear and lack problem. He was inviting them to recognize a deeper reality. He went on to detail this surprising revelation—
“And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12: 29-32
Jesus knew the big Truth – we are spiritual beings living in a spiritual universe governed by spiritual law. That was his message. This is the good news. We are not here alone, cast on earth to fend for ourselves. Most, if not all, problems we humans have stem from that erroneous idea. The Truth is that we are expressions of the One Presence and One Power, God. We are here to learn. We are here to meet life from the consciousness of Spirit. Each of us has within us the living water of wisdom, power, love, and guidance. Even when we don’t know it, even when we don’t feel it, that living water is there for us. It is the ever-flowing goodness of the kingdom of God.
To find it, dig a well. Go deep. Explore your inner life. Pray – talk with God. Express yourself and listen for God’s response. Trust. You will soon discover that indeed it is God’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. And that’s Good News!
